Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was born to a mother of white and black parents. She was raised on her mother's side. She stated that the color of her skin was the primary reason for her feeling excluded by her peers when she was an infant. Their parents were struggling financially and were constantly moving, relocating their lives 16 times to follow her father's job. Russell spoke out about how despite all the hardships, Russell said that she was always a creative person as a child. She wanted to be ballet dancer, then to be an artist. When she was 18, she attended her first acting class, and eventually found her niche. She borrowed money from her job to buy an automobile and travel to Los Angeles to audition. When her funds ran out, she would go back to work until she earned enough money to be able to go back for another audition. The process went on for four years, until she was offered her first big TV role.
